Central America offers a wide diversity of attractions across a small area. An impressive 22 ecosystems are packed into this land of mountains and volcanoes containing; dense rainforests with bountiful wildlife, ancient Mayan ruins, idyllic tropical islands, lava-spewing volcanoes, pristine reefs and a rich indigenous culture. There is an overall friendly, fun and welcoming nature about the people but each country has something unique to offer.

The Yucatan Peninsula plays host to impressive Mayan ruins, beautiful Spanish colonial architecture and hundreds of miles of perfect, white-sand beaches with clear turquoise waters. Cenotes (large sinkholes) occasionally punctuate the limestone terrain, offering a beautiful glimpse of the vast system of underground rivers that runs through the region.

Belize contains the second largest barrier reef in the world and as such has the best diving in the isthmus. Coupled with ancient Mayan cities and a rainforest covered in waterfalls and hidden caves.

Guatemala is the indigenous centre and offers colourful markets, remote lakes lined with pristine volcanoes, cultural towns and probably the best Mayan ruins in central America – Tikal.

Honduras has the bay islands, a small group of islands and atolls that line the reef and is one of the cheapest places to dive in the world. The interior has the cultural capital of the Mayan world at Copan and for the really adventurous the mosquito coast has some of the least explored rainforest anywhere.

Nicaragua is still completely untouched. It has a line of active volcanoes that run the length of the country, one of which sits in the centre of a lake. Its Atlantic coast has waterfalls and jungle and the corn islands off the coast is an excellent way to relax at the end any holiday to this country.

Costa Rica is a nature-lovers dream destination with a patchwork of national parks and reserves that protect an incredibly rich biodiversity. Thanks to years of stability and peace, a sophisticated tourism infrastructure showcases an amazingly rich and varied network of national parks that protect an impressive 25% of the country. This makes Costa Rica one of the most visited countries in Central America.
