Belize holiday and honeymoons; An expert guide to Mountain Pine Ridge

Click here for Mountain Pine Ridge Hotel Reviews

The flora, wildlife and birding in the Maya mountains are like no place on earth. The Mountain Pine Ridge reserve is home to various large mammals, including Puma, Jaguars, Ocelots, White-nosed Coatis, and Baird's Tapirs. Fantastic for birders too; native species of bird include the Eastern Bluebird, Stygian Owl, King Vulture, Blue-crowned Motmot and Red-lored Parrot.

Steeped in Mayan history, relics have been found throughout the region, however it is the remains of the sacred city of Caracol set in lush rainforest which are the main attraction. The area is also an absolute paradise for walkers with dozens of marked trails curling up and around the many waterfalls, rivers and streams. For pure drama… the drop at Big Rock Falls on the Privassion Creek and Hidden Valley Falls is like no other with lemon bright orchids adorning the granite rocks along the waters edge.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO:

  • Take a gentle ride on a horse through the forest to hidden falls and swim under a cascading waterfall

  • Visit the breath-taking Rio Frio Cave with its cavernous stone ceiling and stalactites

  • Explore the stunning Mayan city of Caracol - the most extensive site in Belize

  • Hike to Big Rock Falls and reward yourself with a dip into the cool mountain waters of the creek

It’s a paradise for hikers and cyclists- there are over 100 miles of trails, all of which are expertly sign posted which is reassuring for those who like to go it alone. The trails lead you to dozens of waterfalls, rivers and a lake where you can swim and cool off. Blancaneaux Lodge

Francis Ford Coppola’s lodge in Mountain Pine ridge was discovered by the man himself. FFC was on a trip out to the region in search of a quiet retreat in the wilderness which would be ideal for writing. The abandoned wooden lodge which he found is set back on the rocky slopes of the Privaisson River. Winding paths lead you down to numerous waterfalls and pools which are ideal for swimming.

    Five Sisters Lodge

The simplest of the three lodges set inside the park, but perhaps the one with the best views. The lodge is set across the edge of a steep hill with the river below being clearly visible throughout the property. The defining feature of the river is the 5 waterfalls, after which the lodge was named and noise of the falls becomes a harmonious noise which defines the property.
