Belize holiday and honeymoons; An expert guide to Placencia

Click here for Placencia Hotel Reviews

Placencia is a traditional Creole fishing village with an enviable location. Its brightly painted wooden shacks are found at the end of a palm-covered, 16-mile finger of sand on the south coast of Belize. The superb beaches of this sandy point are met by Caribbean rollers on one side while a sheltered lagoon lies on the other side.

Lying off shore are numerous idyllic islands, mostly unpopulated, ringed with coral and rich with marine life. The lagoon is an ideal habitat for saltwater crocodiles and the rare manatee or sea cow while the inland rivers are flanked with forests and abound with wildlife.

This is a very low key and relaxing paradise. Boats have long been the main means of transport and the main street is simply a line of paving stones laid haphazardly onto the sand!

THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN PLACENCIA:

  • Laughing Bird Caye. This uninhabited caye is surrounded by coral reef and is a short speedboat ride out from Placencia. Relax on the beach, drink a rum punch and enjoy the freshly caught fish cooked on the barbeque.

  • Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. This enormous 200 sq mile reserve is the world’s only jaguar reserve and is home to an estimated 40 to 50 jaguars. You will have to be very fortunate to actually see a jaguar but the reserve has plenty of other wildlife as well as numerous trails leading to hidden waterfalls.

  • Monkey River. A short distance by boat along the coast is Monkey River Town, where the Monkey River enters the ocean. The day is spent going up stream where you will see howler monkeys, crocodiles and colourful birds.

  • Sports Fishing. Troll, spin, cast or fly-fish in rich waters. Local catches are: barracuda, king mackerel, snapper, grouper, tarpon, snook, bonefish.

    The Inn at Roberts Grove

This is one of a number of larger properties along this stretch of coast, although due to the layout of the hotel and the close proximity to the waters edge it seems to have avoided that tag of being a large hotel. Roberts Inn has three swimming pools a restaurant and bar on the beach, pool bar and a pier with a bar at the end as well.
The 52 rooms are spread out along the coast with most offering a sea view.
