Comparable in grandeur to the Amazon basin, Corcovado National Park boasts 46km of untouched coastline and a vast tract of virgin tropical wet forest. This is Costa Rica’s last frontier, often cut off in the rainy season and only recently opened up to visitors. Remotely located on the Osa peninsula in the south west, Corcovado is the most biologically intense area of the world’s most biologically diverse country! This dense forest is host to over 400 bird species including large populations of the beautiful scarlet macaw and 140 species of mammals such as Baird's tapir, the white-lipped peccary and the jaguar. It is also home to the largest tree in Central America, the giant Silk Cotton tree (Ceiba Pentandra) standing 77 metres tall. THINGS TO SEE AND DO: Caño Island Biological Reserve. This beautiful little island makes a perfect daytrip destination, located just off the peninsula in Drake Bay. There is good hiking in the evergreen forest and the curious pre-Colombian carved stone spheres found across the island are a mystery. The coral that surrounds the coast offer excellent snorkelling and scuba diving.Parque Nacional Corcovado. Occupying one third of the peninsula territory, this remote and pristine forest has several trails, access is by boat before discovering the area on foot with your guide.Activities; Sea kayaking, dolphin & whale watching, horseback riding and surfing can all be arranged to suit your interests.
