Guatemala holiday and honeymoons; An expert guide to Livingston

Click here for Rio Dulce Hotel Reviews

Livingston is Guatemala’s taste of the Caribbean with bright sunshine, rainforest and reggae beats. The road stops here, most places are only accessible by boat and life takes a more relaxed pace. With different people, food and scenery it feels like you are in another country!

Rio Dulce

The Rio Dulce is a beautiful tropical river that winds inland from Livingston through a jungle-clad canyon to the rainforest around Lake Izabal. The proudly independent Garifuna people are known for their rich culture, music and dance and offer an interesting contrast to the Mayan people of the highlands.

This makes an ideal stop-off point to stage your journey from the central highlands to Tikal in the north.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO ON THE RIO DULCE:

  • Livingston. This Garifuna town, only accessible by boat, used to be a busy port but is now a sleepy backwater. Enjoy the Creole food and music. There is good trekking nearby through rainforest to a series of beautiful waterfalls.

  • Boat up the Rio Dulce. Half day. Travel on turquoise waters between the towering walls of the narrow gorge as parrots and toucans fly overhead. Swim in the river if you like and experience the natural hot springs that feed into the river. This trip can be combined with bus to travel to Tikal in one day.

  • Castillo San Felipe. Built on the banks of the Rio Dulce by the Spanish in the 16th century to protect the area from Caribbean pirates, it was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt until it was abandoned in the late 18th century. You can combine a visit to the fort with your trip up the Rio Dulce.

  • Rainforest hiking. Walks of differing lengths can be made according to your interest and energy levels. A canopy tour can also be arranged.

  • Manatee spotting. This shy and retiring mammal is a distant relative of the elephant and was mistakenly taken as mermaids by ancient mariners, which is hard to believe when you see their faces.

    Ville Caribe

The ville Caribe is quite simply the best place to stay in this sleepy little Garifuna town, not because it is superb – it is clean and comfortable – but because there are no other respectable options.
The hotels location is its biggest selling point, being on the banks of both the Rio Dulce and the Caribbean Sea and as such it has superb views across the water.

    Banana Palms Hotel

The journey to or from this hotel, located on the banks of the Rio Dulce, approximately 90 minutes by boat from Livingston is half the adventure. You pass small fishing settlements, indigenous villages and a profusion of wildlife, not to mention the superb primary rain forest that surrounds the area.
