Honduras holiday and honeymoons; An expert guide to Honduras

Located in the heart of Central America, Honduras is the isthmus’s second largest country after Nicaragua, covering an area roughly the size of England. Few people make it any further than the impressive ruins of Copan, but if you are willing to go beyond the normal you will find a welcoming country with a limitless range of virgin forests, undiscovered colonial towns and some of the best reefs on the continent.

The Bay Islands

With both a Caribbean and Pacific coast, the options for beach and reef exploration are limitless. The Bay Islands on the Caribbean coast have superb marine life and offer one of the cheapest places to learn to dive in the world. If diving is not for you then its numerous shallow reefs make an ideal place to snorkel. The three islands that make up this archipelago all offer something completely different.

Pico Bonito

This massive protected reserve on the Caribbean coast has numerous trails and rivers to explore and is a haven for wildlife. Nature lovers enjoy the great diversity of plant life to be found in the park’s different eco-systems and adventure lovers can raft superb whitewater rivers through the jungle.

Copan

The Mayan ruins of Copan are one of the finest in Central America, rivalling Tikal in importance. Renowned for intricate detail and the skilfully carved stelae and facades, Copan is on a slightly smaller scale than other classic Mayan sites but is widely considered to be the artistic capital of the Mayan world.

Mosquito Coast

The vast untracked jungles of La Mosquitia on the east coast of the country range from rainforest lowlands to cloud forests on the mountain tops that are teeming with colourful birds and chattering monkeys. This is an undiscovered paradise for those who are a little more adventurous!
