Honduras holiday and honeymoons; An expert guide to The Mosquito CoastThe fabled Mosquito Coast is the largest expanse of virgin tropical jungle north of the Amazon. This is a true highlight for the nature-lover and one of the last frontiers in Central America. Located on the isolated Caribbean coast of north eastern Honduras, its name derives from the muskets that the British supplied to the indigenous locals who continue to inhabit this beautiful wilderness. The Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve lies in the heart of the Mosquito Coast; an enormous expanse (5,250 square km) of broadleaf tropical rainforest with mangrove swamp, sedge prairie, dwarf, gallery and cloud forest. It is home to a great many birds and mammals including endangered species such as the tapir, jaguar, giant anteater, two-toed sloth and mantled howler monkey. THINGS TO SEE AND DO: Wildlife excursions. Depending on interest there are any number of possible trips here, ranging from 4 days to two weeks. You have the option to trek deep into the jungle and sleep in the wilds or make excursions from the simple comfort of one of the local villages. The waterways provide the main means of transport here and also a good way to view the abundant wildlife.Another highlight of a visit to this area is the chance to see and meet the local indigenous people. There are five different ethnic groups – three indigenous and two of more recent extraction – that live in this area and survive through fishing and small-scale agriculture.
