Mexico holiday and honeymoons; An expert guide to Holbox

Located to the northwest of Cancun, Holbox Island is separated from the mainland coast of Mexico by a shallow lagoon, which gives sanctuary to thousands of flamingos, pelicans and other exotic birds and creatures.

It is a peaceful island with a very relaxed vibe; Holbox people mostly make their living fishing – you’ll often see fishermen wandering down the street with their catch. The streets are pale sand and there are very few vehicles – most people get around by bike or golf buggy. The development is generally low rise, with plenty of brightly painted Caribbean style houses, which makes it a great escape from the hectic pace of Cancun!

THINGS TO SEE AND DO:

  • Find yourself a hammock under a palm tree and watch the world go by

  • Settle down with a beer on the sands for an incredible Holbox sunset

  • Try the island’s famous Lobster pizza – it’s delicious!

  • Swim with the whale sharks - they migrate to Holbox every May through September

  • Wild Dolphin trips where you can also encounter Flamingos, Stingrays and rare "Chimay Birds"

  • Fish for big and baby Tarpon, Cobia, Sea Trout, Snook and Barracuda in clear gulf waters, endless flats and mangrove lagoons.
