Mexico holiday and honeymoons; An expert guide to the Yucatan PeninsulaThe Yucatan Peninsula plays host to impressive Mayan ruins, beautiful Spanish colonial architecture and hundreds of miles of perfect, white-sand beaches with clear turquoise waters. Cenotes (large sinkholes) occasionally punctuate the limestone terrain, offering a beautiful glimpse of the vast system of underground rivers that runs through the region. The Beach The Yucatan coastline has the best beaches in Central America where white powder sands are met by a bright turquoise sea. Warm, clear and shallow waters make for easy swimming while the nearby reef is great for diving and snorkelling. Mayan ruins A great many ancient Mayan sites are dotted across the peninsula, reflecting the power and importance of a bygone age. A visit to any of these temples is fascinating but three sites stand out for different reasons:
Chichen Itza – whose size and grandeur never fails to impress
Uxmal – a master class in Mayan sculpture and design
Tulum – steep temples ideally located on sea cliffs overlooking the Caribbean. Spanish colonial influence Distinctive and beautiful European architecture can be found here, particularly in the old cities of Merida, Campeche and Valladolid as well as the haciendas scattered across the land. There are also curious sites such as Dzibilchaltun where a church was strategically planted in the heart of a Mayan temple complex. When to visit the Yucatan Peninsula:Dry season: November – May
Wet season: June – October
