The mighty San Juan river runs through an enormous wildlife reserve which is positively teeming with life. This largely inaccessible swathe of wilderness once carried Conquistadores and pirates into Nicaragua, but now lies dormant. It offers one of your best chances to see the Jaguar, Tapir and Manatee and guarantees close encounters with Sloths, Monkeys, Macaws and Toucans to name but a few. Rio San Juan is a remote 170km stretch of river that links the Caribbean to Lake Nicaragua and marks the border with Costa Rica to the south. Accessible by light aircraft from Managua to San Carlos, followed by a boat journey downriver to the 3000 square km ‘Indio Maiz Biological Reserve’. The riverside accommodation is perfectly situated for exploration in the surrounding jungle. TO SEE AND DO ON THE SAN JUAN RIVER:Indio Maiz Biological Reserve. Hundreds of miles from civilization of any kind, this is the largest and most important nature reserve in Nicaragua and perhaps Central America. There is a great diversity and density of vegetation and wildlife here. You can explore, swim or just relax in your hammock listening to bird song. El Castillo Viejo. The fort was built in 1673 by the Spanish to protect Nicaragua from European pirates and to protect the principal trade route across Central America. Horatio Nelson led the British navy into battle here in a failed attempt to take the fort. It is located 1.5 hours downriver by boat from San Carlos.The Solentiname islands. Located on Lake Nicaragua’s south-eastern tip and reached by boat from San Carlos, this group of forested islands is home to a colony of artists who were attracted by the lush vegetation and birdlife.
