A beautiful little colonial town with a relaxed feel, set around a large plaza flanked by an imposing Franciscan Cathedral. There are three impressive Cenotes or sinkholes that are worth visiting and can be swum in. Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve. Tens of thousands of nesting flamingos congregate here in the summer months from June to August along with 250 species of other bird. Located near the attractive fishing town of Rio Lagartos on the north coast of the Yucatan state. Izamal. This once major Mayan religious site was chosen by the Spanish as a centre to convert to the locals to Christianity. A huge convent and church was begun in 1549, reusing Mayan stonework, and the whole complex was painted rich ochre yellow leading to its nickname as ‘the golden city’. Located between Chichen Itza and Merida.
