Mexico holiday and honeymoons; An expert guide to Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is a spectacular Mayan site and was recently voted as one of the new 7 wonders of the world. The giant stepped pyramid of Kukulkan dominates the ancient city and from its heights you can contemplate structures such as the Warrior’s Temple, the moon observatory Caracol or the Giant Ball Court, complete with grandstand and stone hoops, where prisoners played for their lives.

Located between Merida and Cancun this large site warrants at one least one whole day to fully appreciate its wonder.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

Valladolid. A beautiful little colonial town with a relaxed feel, set around a large plaza flanked by an imposing Franciscan Cathedral. There are three impressive Cenotes or sinkholes that are worth visiting and can be swum in.

Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve. Tens of thousands of nesting flamingos congregate here in the summer months from June to August along with 250 species of other bird. Located near the attractive fishing town of Rio Lagartos on the north coast of the Yucatan state.

Izamal. This once major Mayan religious site was chosen by the Spanish as a centre to convert to the locals to Christianity. A huge convent and church was begun in 1549, reusing Mayan stonework, and the whole complex was painted rich ochre yellow leading to its nickname as ‘the golden city’. Located between Chichen Itza and Merida.
