Mexico holiday and honeymoons; An expert guide to TulumThe setting of Tulum is simply stunning with a compact group of Maya-Toltec temples perched on coastal cliffs above the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Tulum was built in the 12th century and these were troubled times in the Mayan world as reflected by its defensive wall and watchtower, rare in other sites. Despite the beautiful sunrises from here, each doorway faces west and the site is dedicated to the worship of the Falling God or Setting Sun. TO SEE AND DO: Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. The reserve covers 4,500 sq km of the Quintana Roo coast and about one-third is tropical forest, one-third savannah/mangrove and one-third coastal and marine habitats, including 110km of barrier reef. There is a wide variety of land and aquatic wildlife and it is possible to visit all habitats including snorkelling on the reef. Located just south of Tulum.Coba Mayan Site. The delight of this site is that it is only partly excavated and remains largely under the cover of jungle. Tall temples offer a great view of its jungle setting and the many hidden structures help you appreciate the size of this once important city, thought to have covered 70 sq km. It is a good bird and nature watching area with two large lakes.
